A Memoir of War
Marguerite Duras’s autobiographical memoir receives a haunting and hypnotic adaptation in director Emmanuel Finkiel’s A Memoir of War.
Mélanie Thierry gives an intensely powerful performance as the seminal writer, a member of the Resistance living in Nazi-occupied Paris. Desperate for news of her husband, who has been arrested by the Germans, she enters into a high-risk game of psychological cat and mouse with a Nazi collaborator (Benoît Magimel). But as the agonized wait for the man she loves wears on, Marguerite must begin the process of confronting the unimaginable.
Through impressionistic images and voiceover passages of Duras’s semi-autobiographical texts, A Memoir of War evokes the inner world of one of the 20th century’s most revolutionary writers.
